New figures reveal that, in parts of the South, one third of boys arent reaching the expected standard of reading ability by the time they are six. The Department for Education, measures whats called phonics decoding - thats how well children can workout how words sound from the way theyre spelt. Nationally, around three quarters of all pupils reach the required standard, although boys generally lag behind girls.
