New letter from Derek today. Written on Sunday as per usual. They are often short and to the point but this one was shorter than usual. Probably less than 100 words. Just no time to write. He said he did well on Table 1 with Table 2 upcoming on Monday and Tuesday. Then Field week to close out the week. That also closes out Phase 2. He noted that it was only 4 weeks until the crucible and that he cant believe how fast this has gone by. He did ask about having another recruit hang out with us on Family day as they would not have anyone there that day. ---------- By way of explanation and of course from my limited knowledge. Table 1 and 2 are rifle qualification. Table 1 is about traditional markmanship. Shooting from various positions at 200, 300 and 500 yds. Table 2 is about combat marksmanship. Quick reaction and close-range shooting. Field week sounds like a lot of fun. Basic skills like setting up a tent, field sanitation and camouflage to simulated combat environments with patrolling and firing, land navigation by day and night, IED detection techniques, cover and concealment. All of this is preparatory for the Crucible. The Crucible is the final exam. a 54 hour exam with food and sleep deprivation,45 miles of marching and a barrage of day and night events requiring every recruit to work together to solve problems, overcome obstacles and help each other. Only upon the successful completion of the crucible will they earn the title of U.S Marine.
