New message from UNHCR Djibouti: Dear Mrs. Yvonne Meyer, I - TopicsExpress

New message from UNHCR Djibouti: Dear Mrs. Yvonne Meyer, I would like to thank you for your below message and like to inform you that the Office of UNHCR Djibouti has been following closely the situation of the group of Eritrean refugees and asylum seekers in Nagad, from protection and assistance angles. In addition to the humanitarian aid provided by the Djibouti authorities, UNHCR has access to this group of Eritrean refugees to provide them with protection and assistance care on a regular basis (food and non-food items). UNHCR, through its partner CARE, is providing medical assistance to them. UNHCR Djibouti continues to advocate to the authorities for transfer to the refugee camps of these Eritrean refugees. Subsequent requests for transfer have, however, met with refusal from the relevant authorities who invoked national security concerns but also for the own security of the group who could be targeted by infiltrated agents from Eritrea. While pursuing advocacy, UNHCR Djibouti, in consultation with HQ and RSH Nairobi, is also continuing to search for lasting solution to the prolonged retention of the Eritrean refugees in Nagad. Given the position of the Government of Djibouti, at the moment, resettlement is the only option that UNHCR can envisage in terms of durable solution. From 2008 to 2013, UNHCR was able to resettle more than 275 Eritreans from Nagad, mainly to USA. Thank you for your attention and best regards. Albert Wa Nsenga Katumba Senior Protection Officer UNHCR Djibouti Free
