VIDEO: Talking Watches With Kevin Rose Believe it or not, before I became interested in watches, I was interested in other things. My obsession as a teenager and into my twenties was indeed, unsurprisingly, the Internet. It seems almost silly to say that now, but when I was 14 years old and my friends were playing football on a Saturday afternoon, I was (at times) writing code, building my own website. There was a time when the Internet and its use was anything but a given. Clearly I wasnt alone in my fascination with the Web, and there were many that I looked up to when it came to Web-based entrepreneurship. One such person was Kevin Rose. Kevin Rose co-founded Digg in his early twenties, and went on to become a staple of the original dot-com era. Since, hes become a storied angel investor, placing capital into the likes of companies that I think might really be onto something – companies like Twitter, Square, Uber, and Facebook. His track record as an investor was so strong that Google asked him to join Google Ventures, where he has led the investment in several companies, including Blue Bottle Coffee. Recently, Rose took his mobile chops to the horological space by launching watch news aggregator Watchville. But did you really think hed be this into watches without owning a few nice pieces himself? This is Talking Watches with Kevin Rose. His Fathers Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date As with many of us, the first and most important watch in Kevins life was the property of his father. Kevins father passed away some years ago, and this Oyster Perpetual Date is a constant reminder of all that his father did for him growing up. It is his most prized possession. Panerai Radiomir 8 Days Ceramica This is Kevins beater watch. He wears it on the weekends, casually with a t-shirt, and loves the stealth nature of the eight-day power reserve. A. Lange & Sohne 1815 Moonphase 165 Years Homage to F.A. Lange In Honey Gold This is a fabulously rare and sought-after moonphase from Lange. Launched in 2010 on the companys 165th anniversary, this watch is one of three pieces made by Lange in honey gold, a proprietary compound that is harder than yellow gold but certainly more muted. The guilloché dial and movement are done by hand, and this watch is a limited edition of 265 pieces. Swatch Sistem51 This one needs no introduction, but the Sistem51 is a particularly cool watch that speaks to young and old collectors alike. Kevin bought three of them as soon as they were made available on the West Coast, and wears one often. Patek Philippe Regulator Annual Calendar 5235G The 5235 is Patek Philippes first regulator wristwatch, and while it was announced in 2011, delivery didnt actually begin until very late last year. It has become one of the more popular modern production pieces, and the regulator dial layout with annual calendar displayed in apertures, along with the gorgeous satin dial with blue accents, make it a very un-Patek Patek. Ressence Type One It kinda makes sense that a tech guy would own a Ressence, dont you think? Kevins Type 1 is matte black, and totally under the radar. As weve all said, there is simply nothing like it in the world and thats what makes it so cool. Additionally, Ressence will only make very few of these pieces, making Kevins one of a handful to be sold in the United States. A. Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk Handwerkskunst This, my friends, is it. The king of the Zeitwerk family. The limited edition Handwerkskust was shown to us in December of 2012 and it was stated then that there was a good chance wed never see one in the metal again. Only 30 pieces were made for the entire world, making it one of the most limited-production pieces Lange had ever produced. Kevin acquired his via a friend and one of the original 30 clients, and there isnt a more sought-after Zeitwerk in the world than this. Oh, and Kevin also owns a Luminous Zeitwerk, too. For more on Kevin Rose, visit his new company North Technologies, and be sure to check out the websites of their first two apps, Tiiny and of course, Watchville. ift.tt/11UdvWG
