New walking guide joins award winning series South Northamptonshire Council and Brackley-based Global Mapping have published a third walking and cycling guide in its award-winning series. ‘Walk, Eat and Drink in East South Northamptonshire’ features 13 walks and four cycle routes which take in the popular Salcey Forest. The guide highlights walks that are family friendly, those with disabled access and those with wildlife spotting sections aimed to encourage children to observe just what is going on around them. The walks offer a range of distances to suit all abilities and time available, from just one mile to 10.5 miles. The cycling routes range from 11.8 miles to 15.5 miles from the southern most point at Paulerspury to Whiston in the northwest. These routes can be combined for the more ambitious cyclist. Waterways also feature on a number of the walks with the towpath along the Grand Union Canal offering some pleasant flat walks, as well as those beside the rivers Nene and Great Ouse. Councillor Rupert Fordham, portfolio holder for economic development and regeneration, said: “We have done much to promote South Northamptonshire as a tourism destination in the last three years, and this is another really excellent guide that will help visitors and residents really discover the hidden charms that lie within the eastern part of South Northamptonshire. It is a wonderful area for both walking and cycling. Alan Smith, Global Mapping, said: “I have checked out all the walks and what really surprised me was how delightful they are despite the close proximity of some to urban areas. There are beautiful views, plenty of historical interest and some stunning wildlife.” The two previous guides in the series ‘Walk, Eat and Drink in Southwest Northamptonshire’ and ‘Walk HS2 in South Northamptonshire’ both won the prestigious Guide Book Silver Award from the International Map Industry Association which covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa. All are available to download at southnorthants.gov.uk/walking These guides are also available from our offices, attractions throughout the district and the Towcester Museum.
