Newcastlewest Weekly Notes: Intermediate Hurling County Championship Round 3 Newcastle West v Kildimo Next Sunday at 2pm in Askeaton, Newcastle West play Kildimo. We need to win well and have other results go our way to stay on course for a quarter-final place and a chance to play in the top inter grade in 2014. Our form this year has been varied: we were mediocre on a number of occasions but also sometimes played very well, e.g. the first half against Killeedy in round two. Hopefully on Sunday we will have attitude spot on and come away with the win that will keep our championship hopes alive. SENIOR FOOTBALL In the County Championship round 3 Newcastle West play Adare. It is two weeks away, and training continues. JUNIOR A FOOTBALL In the West Championship round 3 Newcastle West play Glin today Wednesday with no information as we go to press. We ar in a good place after wins over Granagh-Ballingarry and Fr. Casey’s. Glin, favourites for West and County honours, will be another step up. JUNIOR B HURLING West Championship round 3 Newcastle West ..........2-9 Killeedy .....................1-12 Templeglantine was the venue on Sunday and Billy Phillips refereed. Some rain fell in the second half but otherwise conditions were excellent. Playing down the hill in the first half we were well on top, picking off a nice 1-8 and conceding 0-5 to be 0-6 ahead at half time. A long range free by Maurice Murphy deceived the goalie and fullbacks and ended up in the back of the net and extended our lead to 0-9 one minute into the second half and to all intents we were home and dried! However, as happened in the County Intermediate Championship in Tour two months or so ago, there was a sting in the tail, Killeedy hurlers are never easy to put away and in ‘Glantine from Maurice’s goal on they began the second half fight back that saw them outscore us 1-7 to 0-1 in the last 25 minutes and claim the draw that didn’t look likely when they were 0-9 behind. Maybe we relaxed, maybe we ran out of steam, maybe Killeedy found the form that had them County Champions in the grade three years ago and Junior A since. Overall then a bit of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde performance by our lads, but a precious place in the knockout stage achieved and hopefully lessons learned about pushing on when you’re ahead. Team: Seánie Gleeson, Ronan Kelleher, Michael Dowling, Duane Blenken-sop, Tom Ryan, Maurice Murphy 1-2, Michael O’Leary, Karl Lenihan 0-1, Michael O’Keeffe, Seán McAuliffe, Aaron McCarthy 0-1, Tommy Kelleher, Jonathan Carey, Damian Garrihy 1-3, Pa Keane 0-2. Subs: James Hennessy, Daniel Copse. As we said, we are now into the knockout stages and the big guns West and County League Champions Templeglantine and Feohanagh Castlemahon, who toppled ‘Glantine at the weekend, await! Training continues. MINOR FOOTBALL PREMIER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Newcastle West v Seán Finns/St. Kieran’s Last evening, at the field, with a number of recent challenges behind us we should be in good form. However, there’s pedigree in the Rathkeale/Ardagh combination. MINOR HURLING WEST A AND B CHAMPIONSHIP Drom-Broadford have established themselves as the favourites for the A title. The other teams involved are neck and neck. Training continues. UNDER 16 FOOTBALL DIVISION 1 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Newcastle West v St. Patrick’s Next Monday at the field, the final game before the semis, we’re through. UNDER 16 HURLING Premier Division Ballybrown ................2-6 Newcastle West ..........7-6 The U16s continued their recent run of good form with a convincing win over Ballybrown last Saturday morning. With temperatures already in the high twenties, the maor uisces from both sides were kept busy. With a few players missing from the 15 that started in the great win over Patrickswell earlier in the week, the strength of the panel was well tested. Among those to answer the call and contribute to another good win were Ronan Creedon, Adam Harrington, Liam Dowling, Adam Corbett and particularly Mykola Blashkiv who scored 1-1 in the first half. Newcastle West were the sharper team all through and, once Brian Hurley shot a quick free to the Ballybrown net in the first minutes, there was little doubt about the result. The West boys continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded with further goals for Seán Murphy, Mykola and Caleb O’Shea to lead by 10 points at half time. Maybe because of our big lead or perhaps due to the intense heat, our tempo dropped at the start of the second half and we struggled to score. Fortunately, the defence stepped up when called upon and prevented the home team from getting the goals they needed to stage a comeback. Conor O’Sullivan was again solid in goal and William Hurley continued his good form. The introduction of fresh legs got our scoring going again and Cormac, Brian, Seán and Caleb got the scores to ensure victory. We sat back from there to the end and let Ballybrown pick up a lot of possession which they turned into goal chances. Despite defensive heroics from Conor, Killian, Seamus and Joseph the Clarina boys converted two of these in the last few minutes to leave Newcastle West ahead 7-6 to 2-6 at the final whistle. Team: Conor O’Sullivan, Joseph Nash, Seamus Hurley, Cillian McMahon, Shane Lee, William Hurley, Colm Foley, Tom D’Arcy, Darren O’Doherty, Caleb O’Shea, Seán Murphy, Brian Hurley, Mykola Blashkiv, Adam Harrington, Ronan Creedon, Adam Corbett, Cormac Long, Liam Dowling and Killian Brouder. U16 HURLING Premier Division Round 7 Deel Rangers ..............0-7 Newcastle West ..........6-6 The scoreline definitely flattered the winners here as with 20 minutes left the Magpies led by just 2 points. Scores were scarce in the first half with both defences on top, but Brian Hurley got us off the mark with a pointed free and followed up with a great goal after excellent play from cousins Darren O’Doherty and Gerald Griffin. Mykola Blashkiv and Diarmuid Kelly added points to leave the half time score Newcastle West 1-3, Deel Rangers 0-0. The expected fight back from Deel Rangers started immediately in the second half and they scored 4 long range points from play and frees within three minutes. Newcastle West finally got back on the scoreboard with a stunning goal from Mykola and gradually the Magpies settled into their familiar game plan. We began to dominate possession and as the Deel Rangers players tired, the scores started to come more easily and in the end there was a flattering 17 points between the teams. With two games left, this team have worked themselves into a position where two wins would see us qualify for the county semi final. However, we will be meeting top class opposition in Adare and Doon, and will need to improve on previous form to get the required results. Team: Conor O’Sullivan, Cillian McMahon, Seamus Hurley, Joseph Nash, Killian Brouder, Willian Hurley, Colm Foley, Tom D’Arcy, Darren O’Doherty, Mykola Blashkiv, Seán Murphy, Caleb O’Shea, Brian Hurley, Gerald Griffin, Ronan Creedon, Diarmuid Kelly, Adam Corbett, Padraig Guiney and Liam Dowling. UNDER 14 FOOTBALL AND HURLING COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS In football we’re into the Division 1 semi final, ourselves against Mungret to decide who plays Old Christians in the final. In hurling we’re Division 2, the second tier, and oppose Adare this Wednesday, hoping to get back in contention after the heavy defeat to ‘Glantine last time out. UNDER 12 Training and championships, hurling and football, are ongoing. UNDER 10 Training is on Wednesdays 6pm and on Saturdays 10am, with blitzes and challenges aplenty part of the agenda. UNDER 8 Training is at An Pairc Amuigh, the outside field, on Wednesdays from 6pm – 7.15pm and on Saturdays from 10am – 11.15am. Cluster blitzes and challenges in hurling and football are on the agenda also. INTERCOUNTY HURLING SENIOR AND MINOR ALL IRELAND SEMI FINALS Senior: Limerick v Clare Minor: Limerick v Galway Fantastic to have the hurlers Munster champions and in the All Ireland semi finals. The minors were brilliant against Waterford in the replay at Thurles a week ago and Croke Park will be packed to the rafters next Sunday fortnight. In 1940 when Limerick won the double, one of the club’s best ever hurlers Paddy McCarthy (RIP) from Boherbue “who could drive the sliotar the length of Brouder’s Field” captained the Limerick minor team. Also an excellent footballer, the late Paddy played for the Munster hurlers in the 1945 Railway Cup. LOTTERY Last Monday’s draw took place at the Central. The numbers drawn were 5, 10, 14 and 25. The jackpot of €9,600 was not won. The five €40 lucky dip winners were: Shane Collins, c/o Declan O’Connor, Teresa Culhane, c/o Peter Culhane, Luke Devine, c/o Martin Sheehan, Breda Hennessy, c/o Pat Condon. John Lydon, c/o Declan Brouder. This week’s jackpot is €9,800. The draw takes place at Ned Lynch’s on Tuesday next August 6th at 11pm. (The change from the usual Monday is due to the Bank Holiday). The club thanks all who are supporting, promoting and hosting the lottery. SYMPATHY All in the club extend sympathy to the Massey family on the death recently of Gerard Massey. May he rest in peace. West U10 Hurling Blitz Last weekend our under 10s competed in the West U10 Hurling Blitz hosted by James Ryan and played in Mick Neville Park. The highlight of the day was the Munster senior hurling trophy which James brought along. All the lads got their hands on the trophy and re-enacted Donal O’Grady’s raising of the trophy on numerous occasions. From a hurling standpoint, we played games against Rathkeale, Knockaderry, and St Kieran’s. Each game was played at a high skill level and was keenly contested. Each boy got numerous touches and they enjoyed the day immensely. Thanks to all the boys and their parents who played and supported them on the day. There will be two All County blitzes in August the weekends of August 17th and August 31st.
