Newest addition to my collection is interesting for more than one reason. Yep, its the Video Masters Guide to Donkey Kong by Steve Sanders... a fairly uncommon find in any condition and somewhat infamous. I used to see this one in a library in Mesquite, Texas in the late 80s. At that time, I checked out and read and re-read all the vintage video game books in that library as I got on my (still going) thirst for any and all video game history I could find. This turned up locally and I was not only intrigued due to the book being one of the few from that era not currently in my archives, but that it was a library book. I asked the seller if he could tell me if it was from that library but he said he saw no markings inside. I bought it regardless, hopeful it would be the very one I once held in my hands all that time ago. It isnt... but the fact of the matter is possibly more interesting. I found a marking inside. This was in the library of Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas (known today as the Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base). It appears to have been checked out on six occasions ranging from December 1982 until November 1984. So basically, members of the United States Air Force were interested in mastering Donkey Kong in the early-to-mid 1980s. Im now curious if there might have been a machine on base, as I once had an Armor Attack machine with markings on it from a local military base as well. Quite likely, too, there was a machine off base, too, and some interested flyboys were tired of being nailed by the bouncy springs. Quite an interesting backstory within a book that already has quite an interesting backstory. This is why I love finding this sorta stuff.
