News Briefs for July 8, 2013 (Amherst) – An ATV accident has killed a man in Amherst. Game Wardens tell WNSX 46-year old Kevin Clements died in the Northern Hancock County town Saturday evening when the 6-wheeler he was operating rolled over and pinned him under the machine. (Trenton) – A portion of Route 230 in Trenton is closed as of today and will likely stay closed for about a week. Construction crews are replacing a huge culvert and Lane Construction officials tell WNSX that 700-feet of the road will remain impassable until the project is complete. (Bar Harbor) – Officials at MDI Hospital in Bar Harbor say they’re looking to October with great anticipation that the state will finally pay its bills. Like most other hospitals in Maine, MDI Hospital is owed money through the Maine Care program for about 10-years. (Ellsworth) – A memorial fund is collecting money to help pay for the funeral expenses for two cousins killed in a vehicle crash in Hancock last week. 20-year old Eddie Fowler and 16-year old Brittany Poors died when the SUV that Fowler drove tried to pass another vehicle on Route 1 in Hancock, went off the road and hit a parked pickup truck. (Machiasport) – A 66-acre parcel of land in Machiasport is now spared from a subdivision plan and rocks with ancient carvings on them will be preserved. Maine Coast Heritage Trust has purchased the land at Long Point in Machiasport. (Undated) –As temperatures swelled this weekend, police responded to a few reports of dogs that were left inside of vehicles. SPCA of Hancock County Operations Manager Diana De Los Santos tells WNSX that if you see an animal in a hot car, do not hesitate to call 911. (Ellsworth) – City councilors in Ellsworth have given final approval to a new budget for the fiscal year that started a week ago. The budget runs just over $10-million dollars, up just over a half percent from last year. (Stonington) Downeast Properties has purchased the assets of a Stonington business that’s been running since 1947. The Island Advantages reports Shepard’s Select Properties of Stonington will dissolve. Downeast Properties will take on their business listings and assets. (Ellsworth) Hotels had few vacancies for the holiday weekend. The Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce says that’s great news for local businesses.
