News in the Dawn of May 13, says polio virus found in sample from main Outfall Road Sewage center of Lahore. dawn/news/1106040 Todays news in Dawn says that polio virus found in a case from Farooqabad is genetically similar to the one found previously in Outfall Road Center sample. dawn/news/1137872/farooqabad-polio-case-genetically-linked-to-outfall-road-virus This child who is a polio victim had completed his vaccination against polio and had received 4 doses of polio drops during the previous 4 campaigns. They have not told whether this was wild type or vaccine virus but my doctor friends can easily see that this is not rocket science to conclude that the virus found in sewage comes from Vaccinated subjects feces (something encouraged for herd immunity and also a reason to prefer oral vaccine). Had it been the wild type there would have been a horrible epidemic of polio in Lahore in the face of our sanitary system (with frequent mixing of sewage water with drinking water). My concern is that giving extra doses of OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine) is increasing the risk of VAPP (Vaccine Associated Paralytic Polio). And the irony (or rather stupidity?!) is that according to the same news, officials have decided to strengthen polio campaigns in these 4 districts where this virus has been found...!!!! Is this a sign of Under-vaccination or Over-vaccination...???
