News that Van Dyke Parks will conduct Wild Honeys Big Star event on Sept. 27 sent me back to this masterpiece, arranged by VDP and produced by Lenny Waronker, both then in the infancy of their remarkable careers. Released 46 years ago, it still sounds like the future. It isnt a pop album -- its a piece of American neo-classical vocal music. Its also the perfect music for an unbearably hot day in Los Angeles -- the music itself is super-heated, like a fever dream of Southern California.
