Newsday Tuesday: Recently, a bunch of college students used their creativity to tackle a very serious, very real problem: the Ebola Outbreak. The USAID - US Agency for International Development announced a $5 million Grand Challenge in October -- focused on the need for better protective gear for health workers in West Africa. Undergrads and grad students took on design challenges and got to work. Day and night, students brainstormed to come up with out-of-the-box ideas including working to make protective suits look less scary to patients. Adding nametags and a clearer face protector were just two elements to help make these suits more friendly. A group of Columbia University in the City of New York students had an idea for a color-changing bleach to indicate when a suit has been completely disinfected. Another group from Duke Universitycame up with a mobile app for people to use in evaluating symptoms. New York University’s Aditya Brahmabhatt sums it up well: “Coupled with the creative minds of passionate students, this creates just the right balance of knowledge and skills for generating quick and innovative solutions.” Read and share the full story here: wunc.org/post/blue-bleach-hazmat-hacks-students-take-ebola-challenges
