Newspapers Review: Israel’s West Bank Railway Focus of Dailies RAMALLAH, July 25, 2013 (WAFA) – Two of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted on their top front page story in their Thursday issue an Israeli plan to build a railway that will go across the West Bank and intended to serve the Jewish settlements. Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said in their headlines that Israel plans to build the railway to connect settlements with Israel proper and, as came in al-Quds, “to consolidate the settlements.” Al-Ayyam, on the other hand, gave small space for this story while its main front page story focused on the developments in Egypt and the call by its defense minister, Abdul Fattah Sisi, on the Egyptian people to demonstrate in the streets on Friday to give the army the green light to confront violence and terrorism. It printed also a short story which said that Washington has expressed concern over Sisi’s call for the protest. This story was also printed on the front page of the two other dailies, with al-Hayat al-Jadida printing a picture for Sisi during his speech. Al-Ayyam printed a picture next to its story on Egypt of the remains of a car bomb that exploded near Arish in the Sinai. Al-Hayat al-Jadida’s front page picture showed President Mahmoud Abbas with the visiting Japanese foreign minister. The peace process and efforts to kick start direct negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel was also highlighted on the front page of the three dailies. Al-Ayyam said that the preliminary talks planned to be held in Washington between the head negotiators are waiting for the outcome of an Israeli security cabinet meeting, while al-Quds said the meeting has been postponed due to differences over core issues. Al-Hayat al-Jadida printed statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying his team was ready for negotiations and most of the Israelis would support a peace agreement. Al-Quds said the Egyptian army started a campaign to destroy the smuggling tunnels between Gaza and Egypt. It said in a different story that a US court has overruled a law that allows Americans born in Jerusalem to state their country of birth as Israel. The paper quoted astrologists saying that Ramadan is going to be 29 days this year and Eid al-Fitr holiday will be on August 8. Al-Ayyam said in a story quoting Israeli sources saying that leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt have escaped to Gaza. It also quoted the Israeli Ministry of Interior defending its decision to put a validity date on identity cards and said this ruling applies to everyone and not only Palestinians in East Jerusalem. It said in another story that Palestinian, Israeli and Jordanian officials are going to discuss on Thursday a plan to build the first Palestinian industrial area in Jericho .
