Ngäbe communities in Panama have been protesting the seizure of their lands since the 1970s. The government is trying to clear them out to make way for the Barro Blanco Dam. Although this violates the Panamanian Constitution, it has been approved by the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism, and is supported by the Inter-American Development Bank, the Dutch state development bank, and the German development bank.
