Niani Parliamentarian Lauds Farmers Gambian president Yahya Jammeh Sunday, August 11, 2013 The National Assembly Member for the Niani Constituency has lauded the tremendous efforts registered by the farmers in the region. Speaking to The daily news at his Latrikunda residence last Friday, Demba BT Sambou noted that the plight of farmers in the area should be considered given the fact that they are hardworking farmer who needed to be encouraged. He said these farmers has responded rapidly to the President’s back to the land call saying that the area which is both an upland and lowland area, the farmers has been cultivating different varieties of crops including rice, millet, maize and groundnut in order to achieve a food self adequacy. Hon Sambou calls for more support to accorded to them as they have constantly been focus in their farming activities. ‘’ Since agriculture is the backbone of any Gambia my concern is to work in partnership with the government, agricultural institutes, farmers in the area and other relevant partners to develop farming in Niani,’’ he said. He said the youth and women are actively involved in farming. Hon Sambou noted that at the moment there are no bantabas in Niani but only gigantic farms across the region which is a clear manifestation that the people of Niani has high regards for the President. ‘’ The only worry we have is a complain lodged by the women farmers of Nema-Bakadaji of the lack of access to their rice fields as the entire area is covered by flood water . He therefore appeal to the NEMA Project and the department of Agricultural Services to bail them from their frustration,’’ he noted. Honourable Sambou again renewed his call for assistance from the recent flood victims in the area stressing that since the flood occurred the victims are living in impasse as they lost almost all their valuable goods. He call on Government, NGO’s, NDMA and other philanthropist to bail them as the victims are poor. The flood condition of Kuntaur, the areas headquarter is alarming because it hampers communication between the town and the villages as well as make transportation of sick persons from the satellite villages to the main health facility difficult. He commended the President for his recent sugar donation to the people of his constituency saying that Jammeh is a true and devoted Muslim and leader who cares for his people.. Author: Aliue Darboe
