Nisha Maheshwari, a senior at Fairview High School (Boulder), gives her reasons for participating in a mass student protest against a requirement to take state standardized tests in science and social studies in their senior year. Nisha said the tests do not cover the subjects students have learned. She doesnt like that schools have their funding cut over test scores when they need more help, and wants time and money spent on learning rather than testing. Nisha concludes standardized testing is not an accurate measure of intelligence and teachers should be engaging students in learning activities instead of teaching to the test. Nisha is #MoreThanAScoreCO - watch her full interview at youtu.be/RCBG7EQQK4M on YouTube. The vast majority of Fairview parents opted their seniors out of taking the Colorado Measures of Academic Success tests, and the students braved sub-zero temperatures during the scheduled testing time to gather outside their school, talk with the media about their stand and do some community fundraising. The students also engaged in a letter-writing campaign to state lawmakers inside the school gym.
