No Pay No Work Laikipia county government workers have downed their tool after negotiations to have them paid their salary arrears of over Sh131 million hit a deadlock last week. The over 500 workers from the defunct Laikipia County Council, Rumururti town council, Nyahururu and Nanyuki municipal Councils have vowed to keep off duty until the money is paid in full. Speaking when they held a peaceful demonstration in Nanyuki town and marched to the governor’s offices they said that they have reached the end of negotiations and started the industrial action. Laikipia County top officials including the governor who they have accused of lying to them were nowhere to be seen while those present locked themselves inside their guarded offices. Laikipia County assembly speaker Peter Kimondo could not convince the employees to have their representatives in a closed door meeting. Nanyuki Branch secretary Phanuel Jaoko noted that they will not go back to work until the arrears are paid in full since their plea to have the county government pay them in phases have failed to materialize. Through placards the employee accused Irungu of purchasing security dogs at a cost of shillings 720,000 instead of first considering the plight of workers who collect revenue on behalf of the government on daily basis. A conclusive meeting was to take place on Thursday last week to sight the recognition agreement and agree on how to pay part of the rears but on arriving in Nanyuki the national officials of the union were informed that county government had indefinitely postponed the meeting. Jaoko said Governor Joshua Irungu had met the workers and promised them better payments at the start of his term but this has remained as mere promises. Union officials said the arrears were for 1993, 2010 and 2012 and negotiations have been going on for the past year. ends
