No Substitute for Courage by: Matt Bevin cjky.it/1cLklNQ When we are through with you, the people who sit behind you in church will get up and move when you come in. This was just one of the many pieces of advice I was given in order to discourage me from challenging Mitch McConnell in Kentuckys Republican Senate primary. Some were less subtle. Our nation was not founded, nor should it be led today, by men and women who could be either bought off or bullied. There is a pervasive sense of hopelessness that has infected the opinion of Americans regarding our elected officials. A sense that it doesnt really matter who we vote for or even if we vote at all. A sense that all politicians are the same and that they do not understand or care about how we live our everyday lives in the rural towns and urban cities of America. I am often asked why I would even want to run for political office. The answer is simple. This is less the result of what I want to do and more a function of what I am willing to do. There is a significant difference. History has always called upon everyday citizens to step up in times of crisis. Winston Churchill noted: Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened. In America today, we have more than simply stumbled over the truth. We have slammed into it with a jarring reality. We know that our nation is on a financially unsustainable path. We know that our leaders are unwilling to do anything about the unconscionable levels of debt crippling our economy. We know that our children and grandchildren will be punished for the selfish cowardice of our supposed leaders. We know the truth. Washington is broken. A recent, glaring case in point is Mitch McConnells arm twisting of fellow Republicans to help Harry Reid and Barack Obama raise the debt ceiling. In handing this administration a blank check, McConnell gave a one-fingered salute to future generations who will suffer the consequences of this reckless behavior. While the Washington press corps and elites have been fixated on the gotcha politics of the past, the voters in Kentucky and across the country are longing for a real discussion of the issues. Unfortunately, however, McConnell and his Washington cronies are desperate to preserve the politics of the past. It is their only hope to hold onto power. They will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo. Yet, something significant happened last week that the American people are not willing to ignore. McConnell used all the procedural tricks in his career politician handbook to undermine the majority of the Senate Republicans. So, what exactly did Republicans receive in exchange for handing Barack Obama an uncapped debt ceiling increase? For handing him the very thing that just McConnell, himself, had told the voters of Kentucky and conservatives across America would be, irresponsible? Nothing. Not a single cent in cuts, or budget reform, or anything. McConnell said that he reneged on his promise for the good of the American people, but then he shamelessly voted against the very bill that he had already forced down the American peoples throats. His hypocrisy stinks. We will never get our countrys spending under control by simply getting a higher credit limit. We cant spend our way out of debt. The solution to our spending problem is to send politicians to Washington who are willing to actually stand up for their principles, instead of always caving under pressure. There is no substitute for political courage. Not power. Not prestige. Not the mutual back scratching of the politically incestuous cronies in Washington. The root of the problem in our nations capital is just that, a lack of courage. So why should Republicans replace McConnell with a father of nine, an Army veteran, a proven job creator and small business owner? A man who, like the average voter, has been paying taxes and paying attention for a long time? Because I will never cave in to the Washington elite like McConnell has. I will fight every day to be a representative voice for the people of Kentucky and the people of America. A voice shaped by decades of experience in the private sector. A voice that speaks the truth, even when it is unpleasant. I will fight with a sense of urgency to put our country back on firm financial footing, because America is worth it. Thats why I am running. I look forward to seeing you in church next Sunday.
