No bail for Army pa, son in slay The Regional Trial Court has recommended no bail bond for the temporary liberty of a retired officer of the Philippine Army accused of shooting to death a reported lover of his former live-in partner inside a videoke bar in Sasa, Davao City last month. Retired Army 2Lt. Rex Veñegas will stand trial on murder charges before Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 16 under Judge Emmanuel Carpio for the death of Rolando Jumamoy, 42, a resident of Doña Salud Subdivision, Sasa Davao City. Aside from the murder charges, the retired Army officer and his soldier-son Private Mark Ryan Veñegas of the 25th Infantry Battalion are also facing frustrated homicide charges for the shooting of Police Officer (PO) 3 Rey Alburo of the Sasa Police Station who responded right after Jumamoy was shot. Based on the complaint affidavit of Alburo, he said he was at his sister’s home in Sasa since it was his day off when he received a call from Jumamoy inviting him to have a dinner at Pink J Spot Videoke, also in Sasa, owned by Jumamoy’s girlfriend Juvy Escote, the former live-in partner of the older Veñegas. While sitting at one of the tables, Alburo said he noticed that two persons arrived in the place, and the older Veñegas knocked hard on the door of Escote’s office, prompting Alburo to approach him and introduced himself as a police officer. Alburo said Jumamoy also went to him and it was then that the retired army officer pulled out a handgun from his waist and shot his friend Jumamoy. Upon seeing his friend stumble on the floor, Alburo grabbed the firearm from Veñegas’possession and it accidentally went off hitting his right hand but the policeman was able to disarm the older Veñegas. Alburo said the retired soldier still tried to get the firearm prompting the policeman to shoot him hitting his body causing him to run. But Veñegas’s son, Army private Mark RyanVeñegas, shot Alburo in the chest and abdomen. The father and son then left the area on board a motorcycle but they proceeded to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) where the younger Veñegas was accosted by the police. Alburo was rushed to the San Pedro Hospital where he underwent a surgical operation. In a resolution, Prosecutor II Carlos Castaños found sufficient basis to hold Rex Veñegas for trial to the crime of murder for Jumamoy’s death. But Rex along with his son Mark Ryan, were also held liable for the crime of frustrated homicide for trying to kill PO3 Alburo. Jessie L. Casalda
