No other cinematic experience can deliver the goods quite as magnificently, nor as totally immersive, as the IMAX format can. For a filmmaker its a opportunity to almost, quite literally, put the viewer into their film and transport them to global, cultural destinations that are seldom ever seen or to near dizzying, inhospitable environments on our planet, or beyond, that the average, normal, everyday person just could never imagine visiting. For a composer its a dream job and a chance to do more than just merge music with fantastic visuals, but it is also an opportunity to make use of the most sophisticated sound environment in the world. That said, one of my all-time favorite IMAX experiences is likely due to the rich expansiveness of its music and that film is COSMIC VOYAGE (1996). For that film, which is a colorful trip around the universe, composer David Michael Frank wrote a powerhouse of an orchestral score and one that eloquently elevates the films soundscape into epic proportions. This is not to say that the music is always massive sounding, as it also has passages that easily shifts between being monumental and to those that are more intimate.
