No phones. No lights. No running water. What would you do if the whole country went dark and you didnt know if or when the power would be coming back? (Source: National Geographic) The National Geographic special, American Blackout aired last Sunday and addressed this question and the chronic threat of a cyber-terrorism attack. A cyber-attack would be devastating, as the program illustrates. But even more devastating would be a nuclear blast-generated EMP attack, because it would include the power grid failures chronicled in American Blackout plus failures of cell phones, computers and most transportation. So watch American Blackout as only one aspect of the danger of an EMP attack - and then ask yourself, Why isnt the Obama Administration taking this seriously? Why arent they using their regulatory authority (that they seem all too willing to use without restriction in so many other areas) to urge regulated utilities to install relatively inexpensive shielding and system redundancy? After youve asked yourselves those questions, get ready to learn more about EMP from our upcoming major project on the issue that we will debut on the web in the second week of November. Learn more about the potential for an American Blackout and the ever-present and ongoing risk of cyber-terrorism by visiting National Geographics website. Furthermore, the National Geographic Channel will be airing American Blackout again on these dates: Sunday, November 3 | 10AM Tuesday, November 5 | 3PM Wednesday, November 13 | 9PM Wednesday, November 13 | 11PM Wednesday, November 20 | 5PM You can also watch it on an unofficial YouTube channel here.
