North King St 1920. As usual crowds of locals stand talking after the ambush which seen Kvin Barry captured and 3 British soldiers Killed, 1 at the scene 2 more would later die of Injuries. Most of us know of the circumstances surrounding what happened that morning, the plan was to ambush and relieve the soldiers of their Guns without any problem,it wasnt to be a full scale fire-fight, after all it was only a small group of soldiers collecting bread at a local bakery, but the best laid plans of mice and men came into play and a soldier opened fire and fire was returned. Barrys Gun jammed and he rolled under the truck, he may have gotten away in the confusion that followed but for a concerned local woman who feared for his safety, she screamed out about the boy under the truck as the troops pulled away from the scene. Even to this day there is mystery about the identity of that woman, I know 2 names that popped up over the years but I wont repeat as they arent around to defend themselves and it would be unfair to put them out there as they probably have ancestors still in Dublin..and believe me its a small world. If 2 People with a great historical knowledge of the incident gave different versions years later then who am I to say who was right, the problem is I doubt if anyone will come forward and say that was my Granny,who called out that Morning In later years the late great Eamon Mac Thomais spoke of a lady who was later killed by a truck at the same spot as the victim who shouted out. But Kevin Barrys sisters statement later to a historical tribunal was to point the finger at another named woman, Kevins sister hoped the lady didnt suffer in anyway from her actions that morning. But with the outpouring of grief over Kevins hanging im sure manys the aul hag, or drunken fool blamed the unfortunate lady for been responsible for Kevins death. I think when it all boils down when your time on earth is up its faith that choses the circumstances, as that day Kevin was due to sit a medical exam, he thought he would have time to do the job and make it back to sit the exam..but faith had a different plan for him.
