Not Another Gospel Galatians 1:1-9 Trouble was brewing in the churches of Galatia-trouble that came in the form of false teachers who sought to mix the gospel of the grace of God with law-conditions. In his study Bible, C.I. Scofield pinpoints two forms of error in his prefatory notes to this epistle: (1) the teaching that obedience to the law is mingled with faith as the ground of the sinners justification; (2) that the justified believer is made perfect by keeping the law. Paul was amazed that the believers in Galatia had so quickly been taken with what he called another gospel (v.6), calling them unwise and fascinated by false representations (3:1). And yet, he hastened to inform them that it was not another gospel (v.7). Two different Greek words are used and translated another in verses six and seven. In the first instance, the word means another of a different kind (v.6); in the second, the Greek signifies another of the same kind (v.7). Paul carefully instructed them that this so-called good news they had embraced was a different gospel-a false gospel. Furthermore, this message received from false teachers was not only different in character from the gospel (Paul) had preached to the Galatians, but it (was) different in a bad sense. It (was) essentially evil (Wuest). If the message excludes grace, or mingles law with grace as the means either of justification or sanctification, or denies the fact or guilt of sin which alone gives grace its occasion and opportunity, it is another gospel and the preacher of it is under the (curse) of God (Scofield). The true gospel is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus alone, who, as Paul clearly declares, gave Himself for our sins (vv.3-4).
