Not a Big-Shot Be Super-human "Single-minded Pursuit of Material Wealth" There is nothing wrong in trying to amass ever more wealth. In a way, it is the reward of our hard work. However, extreme striving for it can lead us astray from our true nature. From this perspective, we could say that an overly intense pursuit of material wealth leads to personal as well as societal downfall. The famous thinker E. F. Schumacher explains this further by suggesting that an all consuming insistence on material progress hurts us in two ways. First, it negates the need of sacrifice if our goal is universal prosperity and peace. Second, science and material progress alone can not be the answer since they bring aboutinequality and exploitation." NOTE: In his book "Small is Beautiful", Schumacher says, "An attitude to life which seeks fulfillment in the single-minded pursuit of wealth-in short, materialism-does not fit into this world because it contains within itself no limiting principle, while the environment in which it is placed is strictly limited." "समृद्धि के प्रति एकांगी आग्रह समृद्धि बढ़ाने के लिए प्रयत्न करना कोई बुरी बात नहीं है। एक प्रकार से वह मनुष्य की श्रमशीलता का पुरस्कार है। लेकिन समृद्धि के लिए आत्यंतिक आग्रह मनुष्य को अपने स्वभाव से ही विचलित कर देता है। इस दृष्टि से समृद्धि के प्रति एकांगी आग्रह मनुष्य को व्यक्तिगत और सामाजिक रूप से पतन की ओर धकेलता है, इस तथ्य को स्पष्ट करते हुए प्रसिद्ध विचारक ई. एफ. शूमाकर ने लिखा है कि आत्यंतिक समृद्धि से सर्वतोनमुखी की धारणा मुनष्य को दो प्रकार से क्षति पहुँचाती है। पहला तो यह कि इस धारणा ने शांति की ओर प्रगति के लिए त्याग अथवा शांति को अनावश्यक घोषित कर दिया है, और दूसरा यह कि जिस विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी का विकास हमने आज कर लिया है उसके कारण असमानता और शोषण की परंपरा बलवती होती जा रही है। -पं. श्रीराम शर्मा आचार्य, बड़े आदमी नहीं महामानव बनें.
