Not so long ago, after the initial few overs of medium pace, it was all about couple of slow left arm spinners bowling relentlessly in a test match for Bangladesh. A variation in the form of an off spinner has been sought by every Bangladesh test captain since NaimurRahmanDurjoy’s retirement. ShohagGazi’s inclusion as a quality off spinner in the recent past has been a sigh of relief for Bangladesh. Mysteriously Bangladesh has never stopped producing quality SLA spinners years after years. But, it was becoming quite predictable for the oppositions and Bangladesh desperately needed a different weapon on their arsenal.Having been called up to play against the West Indies in November 2012, Gazi bowled the first ball of the first test in Mirpur. The ball was hit for six by Chris Gayle, the first time this had been achieved in the history of the game, although he finished the innings having bowled 47 overs with figures of three for 145 and a more impressive six wicket haul in the second innings. His controlled wrist spin made him immediately Mushfiqur Rahim’s main strike bowler for the rest of the series. It wasn’t easy for Sohag Gazi to reach the top. He is originated from Patuakhali, near the Bay of Bengla. He started his cricket at Khulna where his dad was posted and played in different local leagues. His performance for the First Division Cricket League for Orient Sporting Club paved the way for his First Class appearance for Barishal Division in 2009-2010 season and took a five-for in his very first match. His outstanding performance in First Class Cricket included him in Bangladesh A team squad for a few home and away tours. He has been under selectors review ever since and his continuous good performance resulted in his inclusion in the Bangladesh’s test squad against West Indies in 2012. Shohag Gazi, despite a short career, has already made to the record books numerous times. He is only cricketer in the history of Test Cricket to score a century and a hat-trick in the same test. He achieved this feat in the Dhaka Test against New Zealand in 2013 and scored 101* in the first innings and took 6-77 in the second innings including a hat-trick. This was the pinnacle of his test career. Not only that, he also achieved the same feat in a First Class match earlier this year, which made him only the third ever to do so in first class cricket. Shohag Gazi is a much needed addition to Bangladesh’s squad. His wrist spin brings a lethal variation to Mushfiqur’s arsenal and his more than handy batting is crucial for Bangladesh’s late order success.
