Not too long ago, I went to my local Pep Boys to take advantage of a oil change and tire rotation that was priced at $21.99 with a coupon I even went so far to make an appointment the day before. I showed up, told the manager I was here for my appointment and presented my coupon. He informed me that the manufacture of my vehicle recommends synthetic oil, which was priced at $49.99. I informed him that at best I used a synthetic blend, one grade lower from synthetic, but I was okay with using regular motor oil. After being informed of the syn blend oil price, I reiterated that regular was okay and that I preferred that. The manager then informed me that he couldnt do the oil change because I didnt want to follow the manufacturers recommendations, and he apologized. I went home, and sent a feedback report to Pep Boys explaining the events. I didnt hear back from Pep Boys until about 4 days later, with a voice message stating they were seeing if I was satisfied with the results of my feedback, and that if I wasnt I needed to call their 800 number. I did this today, only to be put on hold for about 10 minutes, listening to a recording thanking me for staying on the phone, and that I can continue to wait or leave a message. I opted not to leave a message as they didnt get back to me the first time, and hung up. Before becoming a paid firefighter and after leaving the military, I worked as general manager for Jiffy Lube in the Richmond area and worked at a truck service facility as an assistant shop manager. I didnt turn away customers because they didnt follow manufacturers recommendations. Why? Because I wanted your business, there was always a possibility you may want my establishment to perform those extra services in the future. Now, some of you may have had positive dealings with Pep Boys, I am glad for you, really, I am. I am just letting everyone know of my experience so if you get asked about them, you can relay my story to them.
