Notice to our rural neighbours: There has been considerable concern expressed by rural residents regarding the August 28, 2013 Council decision to close the City’s waste water transfer facility effective December, 31, 2014. This closure is based on changes to the Federal Sewer Regulations as of January 1, 2015 and the risk/liability that the City is exposed to in accepting waste from outside our community. The City is unable to extend rural residents use of the facility unless there is relaxation of the regulations by the Federal Government combined with appropriate risk mitigation measures implemented by the PRRD. We are in discussions with the Federal Government regarding this request but have no indication that they are willing to relax these new regulations. It is our understanding that PRRD is looking at options to address this issue and that they hosting meetings to present a Rural Potable Water and Sewer Service which requires the support of the rural taxpayers. The City of Fort St John appreciates the importance of appropriate disposal of sewage. We encourage all rural residents to work with the PRRD on this critical issue.
