November 19, 2014 Statement by Los Angeles County - TopicsExpress

November 19, 2014 Statement by Los Angeles County Supervisor-Elect Hilda Solis on President Obama’s Pending Immigration Announcement President Obama will be doing the right thing for so many hard-working, tax-paying American families. Parents and children will be spared the fear of being torn apart because of their residency status. Workers can continue to produce the goods and services that fuel our economy. Bright students can continue to gain knowledge that will elevate their potential and accelerate the growth of the nation’s economy. The Social Security Trust Fund will grow, benefitting all. A majority of Americans know that when we act with common sense, we all win. We know that deporting our law-abiding, hard-working neighbors, parents, in-laws or co-workers makes no sense. That is why the majority of Americans support immigration reform. But there is more to do. The House needs to pass the bi-partisan Senate bill to provide a permanent fix. We must recognize that denying anyone health care does not save money – and endangers everyone’s health. We must stop using police officers as political pawns in the emotionally-charged immigration debate. Los Angeles County participates with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a program called 287(g). This fundamentally flawed program requires our Sheriff’s deputies to act as federal ICE agents. When deputies could be building bridges with residents to keep communities safe, they must instead waste their time engendering fear, not trust. I hope a new Sheriff and Board of Supervisors will reconsider our county’s participation in 287(g). We must do what we know works best for our communities and our economy, not what we think works best for political campaigns. ###
