November 30 Its still your birthday, Brittany. I suppose it always will be. Twenty-two years since you were born, and now a little more than four since you went away. We wont have cake or ice cream - you never much cared for them anyway. But well have mac & cheese, remember your goofy grin and beautiful mouth and wide eyes and a heart so big that when it broke, as it sometimes did, tremors like an earthquake shot out. And when that heart stopped beating, the whole town shook. Hundreds turned out for your funeral, stunned, and you were not there. You left without saying goodbye - a surprise birthday party in reverse. So now, every November 30, we wait in the dark with the gifts you gave us, not quite sure what to do.
