Now, I do not agree with all of this but if you want to get a glimpse of Genesis 1 through the eyes of the ancients, this is really excellent. John Walton is one of my ancient Near Eastern context teachers. His IVP Bible Background Commentary of the OT and Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament are just excellent resources. The Genesis account was never intended to be a defense against evolution - thats what modern apologists have turned it into, but the important thing about Genesis is what it reveals about our King and about our relationship to Him.
