Now Im thinking about psychologist Bertram Karon on the collective - TopicsExpress

Now Im thinking about psychologist Bertram Karon on the collective unconscious. There isnt one. Not in terms of all cultures places and times. There are symbols which have widespread meanings though they change with place and time. But you will always find people who assign other than the usual meanings. I think about this in terms of creativity. A lot of people want to express more creativity than they do. Some people are real outliers in a number of dimensions. They can assign meanings that are fairly idiosyncratic. I think I tend to do this. However I also learned societys generally agreed-upon meanings. This has required a back-and-forth switch until I got used to doing both. In the past Ive sometimes alternated between expressing a more standard point of view and expressing one that is fairly different. What I really wanted to do and have been attempting my whole life is doing these both at the same time. That is expressing personal meanings in clearly understandable language that doesnt bring that split feeling. Being too much like other people is censorship. Being too different leads to withdrawal over difficulty making myself understood. But expressing them both leads to fulfillment or useful activity in a way others can understand, though it may or may not be like them. As philosophical as all this sounds, it has implications for going back to work.
