#Now #What: Over 1000 candidates failed to take their #Standard 7 National Exams in #Arusha because of #pregnancy and chronic absenteeism, according to the latest data from the Regional Education Office. While we wait for reviews from other regions to get a more-rounded picture of the state of national education in Tanzania, it behooves us to ask ourselves a few questions: One, what can #Tanzanians – as a nation and as a people – do to keep these young, misguided boys and girls in formal education? Surely we can’t let this little setback be the end of their journey? Two, does pregnancy have anything to do with one’s abilities in the classroom? Is it not silly – and counterproductive – to tell a girl she’s can’t sit her finals just because she’s pregnant? In our zeal to dictate and regulate social behavior, aren’t we denying thousands of girls THEIR #UNIVERSAL #RIGHT to a decent #education on the basis of nothing but the ‘icky’ factor i.e. our own discomfiture with teen pregnancy?
