Now heres a track that Ive been playing from the moment I finished it till today. A production that took quite a long time to nail because I wanted it edgy, rough-ish without losing soul and feeling. Its easy to overdo things, but its extremely hard to hold back and let it all speak for itself. I was contacted by Nima who at that time was A&R manager of Star 69 Records that was owned by the late Peter Rauhofer. He asked me if I was up for doing a remix of one of Offer Nissims tracks. I didnt had to think twice and said yes. The only part sent to me was the vocal and honestly I think I listened to the acapella for a couple of days in a row before even starting this remix. Unbelievable.. what a feeling! My thoughts where simple..how can I compliment the vocal line without messing it up to much. Now I remember beginning with the bass-line for this track and the kick drum. Its a 4/4 beat, but the kick drum repeats here and there like a .. kick roll kind of thing. I was literally just playing around with notes in the kick drum midi part and came up with this.. decided to keep it. I altered the sample a bit and boosted the low end. Its the same kick drum as in Rush and my remix for I Believe, but in all productions I changed the feel / sound of it by either layering them or changing the eq quite a bit. Lets continue.. The bass line had to be able to carry the entire production and the vocal so it needed beef and presence. As with most of my bass lines.. I bring out the Trilogy (trilian these days). It wasnt any different in this case. The only thing different here in this production was that a tube amp and distortion gave it more body, and applied portamento to the bass line. Most sounds you hear in the track was recorded as how I played them on the keyboard and the snap in the piano roll stayed off for most of the time to keep it all grooving. Some notes or parts where quantized as well. It are just milliseconds, but overall it gives a different feel I find. Then I needed percussion. I literally added the dirtiest loop I could find and placed it in the mix and then… I raised the volume by quite some dbs to have it sit in the mix loud and proud. Just for the hell of it. It started to take shape when I gave the Virus TI a riel treatment which resulted in the mid bass pattern that starts around 1.38, then I created the strings that kick in at 2.08 with the Virus TI as well. Gave the vocal a long reverb tail here and there and filtered it a bit at 2.23 then opened it up when she starts saying I lost you at 2.40. Added a Nexus channel and used it as layer for the mid bass from 2.24. At 2.52 and slowly opened up the filters. In the mean time I had prepared different vocal edits and fx that I planned on using through out the build up and in the breakdown. Not a lot of those edits made it, but hey .. you can never be to prepared haha. I changed the pattern of the Nexus midi part in to higher notes and that started to really guide everything in to the breakdown. Often it are these moments during the production process that let me know that Im on the right track. Started automating and panning some of the pluck-ish sounds to create a bit more space. Opened up all filters at 3.51. Took more strings and added the vocal.. and started changing chords. It just was exactly what I was looking for for a few weeks at that stage.. The one think I remember adding as well was that over compressed and side chained snare drum that you hear at 5.05. My friends always say, here he comes with that snare drum again hahah.. I just had to do it. After the breakdown was down it was a pretty easy task to finish it. Everything is open as it comes out of the break and then I just slowly started to fade things out and cut filters and what not, but let the drive and groove continue. Actually, funny.. when it was finished I added the radio preset of the standard steinberg multiband comp to it.. that was it. It just felt like it had soul, edge and feeling. So I left it at that. Nothing more then that when it comes to mastering or the mix down. Weirdddd hahah. It was my first tune of the week and it got really wide spread support that I never expected at all. And till this day people ask me to play it, so cool =) Here is Offer Nissim ft Maya - For Your Love (Sied van Riel Remix) https://youtube/watch?v=LvFDzMVpOzs
