Now that Oscar season is well behind us, I will reiterate my ongoing disappointment and deflated esteem for the Academy ever since Sean Penn (as both director AND screenwriter) and the movie Into the Wild itself were almost entirely snubbed by the Academy. Barely a nomination. Eddie Vedders soundtrack was one of the best in decades, the cinematography, directing, writing, acting-- the sheer beauty and deep tragedy of that great film went almost entirely passed-over way-back in 2008. And I may never forget or respect the Academy for that massive oversight. Hal Holbrook was just fine in the movie, and deserved his plaudits (and its certainly okay that he didnt beat Javier Bardem as Best Supporting Actor, considering Bardems towering and unforgettable performance that year in No Country for Old Men), but otherwise the whole thing is unforgettably shameful. The only other nomination for Into the Wild was Film Editing.
