OBAMA BOOTSTRAP SHORTAGE The sale (and hoarding) of bootstraps rose sharply the day after the election of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States, based largely on the fear that upon taking office the new President would issue an executive order to raise the bootstrap tax as a prelude to eventually confiscating all bootstraps in the United States. “I want my bootstrap back!” wailed one rugged individualist. “How will I raise myself up now?” asked another. “I’ll be helpless!” Said a spokesperson for the National Bootstrap Association (NBA) “First they came for my bootstraps — and I did nothing. Then they came for my gumption — and I did nothing. Finally, they came for my backbone — but it was too late.”
