OHHS ThanksGiving #2 goes out to Lyonel LaGrone Jr.. Man where do I start. I first met Lyonel at Lady Moore Karate class. He had all the cockiness and confidence that he could kick anyones ass. 2 weeks later I see him at the Y bball league and weve been boys ever since. One day, we were coming up with nick names for our Macker Teams and Val Jones blurted out Swell Lyonel and it stuck. Swell (as we called him) always had my back, my front, and my sides too. My teenage years were ruff and there are only a handful of friends that I have that know the whole story and Swell was one of them. That friendship taught me how to trust people because there are things about me that only Swell knows about, which is why he is my go to guy. He ALWAYS CAME TO GET ME in his moms red Cavalier ... cmon O ..where we going, Cmon O...where we going. I dont ever think that Ive made a life-decision without talking to him about it 1st. Like the Guytons, the Lagrone family welcomed me in as well and Gloria LaGrone was no joke. Going to their house after school taught me structure. Homework for an hour, chores, and then play...NO EXEPTIONS. I didnt know it then...but Swell and his mom taught me how to study and prioritize. After HS Swell went off to Wilberforce...and then Central State...and then AT&T (pick one he was there) then J State I think and off to DC...by the time he came back he had 6 different colleges under his belt. I nicked named him Transcript because of all the colleges that he attended. I lived vicariously through him because he had all of theses stories of the places that he had gone and the friends that he had made, which in my mind, at that time was courageous. To this day, Swell is one of the most unpredictable friends that I know because he is always looking for a different approach that will benefit his life. Every move that he makes is one more life experience that improves his stature. All of those experiences has allowed him to be a leader in the fair housing sector and at one time I know he was a National Director. What that taught me is to never be afraid to take a chance on something that you believe in including yourself. When I graduated with my bachelors there was a level of pride that came over him that I could visibly see....like, my brother made it. Thanks for everything Swell! #Classof90 #indian4life #kingpark #OHHS #homage #ThanksGiving College Graduate! Role Model! Professional!
