OK... Ive been off at a workshop on Community Colleges this week, so Im all hopped up with ambition and a sense of do-gooding (I know... I conjugate my nouns to make up new words). My last post made me think of ths: If you have a high school student in Iowa who is interested in a career and wants a job shadow or internship, each community college district was given almost $100,000 by the state to coordinate those opportunities. We know that by their junior year, your students are usually padding up to 25% of their schedule and 50% by their senior year with fluff classes. If this describes your student, and you think some career exploration might be beneficial, you might want to talk to the Regional Intermediary at the local community college. With the new federal guidelines, a large portion of these are also paid internships... Students who go to college knowing in general what they want to do are significantly more likely to graduate on time... or at all.
