OK guys, having read some comments on a recent post about a woman justifying her use of animal skin products made me post this reflection. And it is also something I had been thinking ever since I got into this whole vegan activism thing. And the fact is, that I have been vegan for 3+ years now. But I never really cared for starting a vegan activism group in my country, Venezuela, where veganism is not really popular nor something my country folks really care about. And the thing is, that as I understood it, we vegans dont care that much about humanity. Yeah, granted, those who take the vegan activism responsibility do it for the animals. But I consider myself more of an environmental vegan. The way I understand it, we vegans cannot save all the animals. And even more all the farm animals. From the environmental point of view, if we had a vegan world, not all those farm animals would exist. I care more about wildlife than farm animals. Sure I am completely against animal cruelty, but farm animals shouldnt have to exist in the first place. So earlier this years I joined some young people that took it upon themselves to spread the vegan message on the streets. And I did it because I had seen them take the insults from people many times. I told them that, focusing on animal rights only to let people know about veganism in Venezuela was a lost fight. So I began guiding to take the medical and environmental arguments on veganism. And people stopped bashing them and began listening. But the whole experience got me thinking. I dont really care about the fate of humanity, nor those people that we speak to on the street that would try to justify by all means animal slavery and consumption. I had already known that although I love the vegan way of life, its precepts cannot be fully achieved, nor they alone would solve anything at all. It got me thinking that, veganism is against the anthropocentric notion of humanity, but by trying to spread the whole vegan arguments to people, they see you as if trying to save humanity from its demise, which is antropocentristic by itself. I have really thought about leaving activism aside. Again I have no fate in humanity. And I am not really sure if I would enjoy a vegan society anyway. I apologize if all this sounded a bit big headed. But I had to let it go somewhere.
