My grandfather was a Fireman(guy that shoveled coal in stream engined ) on the NY central till they switched over to diesel His last run was on the NYC Locomotive. #6020 August 7, 1953 New York Central Niagara 6020 leaves Harmon with Train 185, the last NYC steam locomotive to operate in New York State. It was also his second from last day working. His first day on a diesel they had him turn on the valve in a ceremony switching over the diesel and ushering in the new era and took the run back up the river were his job then went from shoving 16 ton of coal a day to just turning on a valve and watching a gauge. Them they retired him at the end of that run Gave him nice watch and wished him luck. On his way home that day. He was walking home from the station along the tracks in Rensselaer. like he did every day in and day out and had a heart attack and died.
