ON THE SCENE --How the media discovered Ferguson, by POLITICOs Byron Tau in Ferguson, Mo.: After several nights of intense community outrage over the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, it wasnt until two Washington-based reporters from The Huffington Post and The Washington Post were arrested by heavily armed local police that the political class in D.C. and Jefferson City started paying attention. Days of Twitter dispatches and Instagram videos from the protesters themselves had done little to change police behavior. But Wednesday night, tweets and stories about the arrests of Washington Post reporter Wesley Lowery and Huffington Post reporter Ryan Reilly, along with harassment of other journalists, got the mainstream media machine moving. An important story - involving the shooting of an unarmed African-American man by a police officer, public anger over the lack of details from the police and a heavily armed response to protests - had become something that hit home to journalists. ... Social media interest in the event peaked on the night the reporters were arrested and other journalists were denied access to the site ... According to Twitter analytics engine Topsy, the search term Ferguson got about 200,000 mentions Tuesday night. Wednesday night, there were nearly 700,000 mentions. Ferguson has become a true media circus since the arrests - with reporters often outnumbering protesters during the daylight hours at the site of a burned-out gas station. Journalists continue to turn fast food restaurants into impromptu filing centers - buying power strips at the Family Dollar to keep their computers charged. CNNs Jake Tapper and MSNBCs Chris Hayes have broadcast live from the site. ... Lowery and Reilly are now local celebrities. The customers and management at a local bar took turns buying Reilly rounds of free drinks this week. Both are approached constantly by other reporters, filmmakers and protesters who recognize them from television. Strangers come up to them to take photos. politi.co/1Bn7CPJ --BREAKING - St. Louis Post-Dispatch, After days calm, a storm erupts overnight in Ferguson, by Koran Addo and Paul Hampel: The several hundred protesters who had remained had been fairly peaceful but stood in a face-off with police ... The groups stood about 20 feet away from one another, some police officers pointing guns at the crowd, some protesters pointing cameras at police. Police told the crowd over a loudspeaker to disperse immediately. Some in the crowd threw a few bottles at police, who didnt initially react. After several minutes, police turned and left, but as they retreated, they sprayed smoke bombs and threw sound cannons at the crowd. Some responded by throwing more bottles. Dozens in the crowd ran up West Florissant in a panic, some jumping in their cars and driving the wrong way on the road. Once the police were out of sight, protesters fired guns at least 10 times into the air. Later a barricade of vehicles blocked traffic on the street. bit.ly/1v13yQO --Bouncy castles and bowling pins: The odd and hilarious things the Pentagon is giving to local law enforcement, by Wonkblogs Christopher Ingraham: Nine BMX Rollerskate Helmets, valued at $45 each ... Yet, by APs Josh Boak and Bernard Condon: A big reason is that five years after the Great Recession officially ended, the U.S. economy is showing a strength and durability that other major nations can only envy. Thanks in part to the Federal Reserves ultra-low interest rates, employers have ramped up hiring, factories have boosted production and businesses have been making money. ... Still, the global turmoil comes at a delicate time. China, the worlds second-biggest economy, is struggling to contain the fallout from a runaway lending and investment boom thats powered its growth since before the 2008 financial crisis. The economies of Japan and Germany, the worlds third- and fourth-largest, shrank in the spring. So did Italys. It might not take much - an oil-price spike, a prolonged recession in Europe, a plunge in business or consumer confidence - to derail the global economy. yhoo.it/XnQoT9 SPOTTED, popping into a birthday lunch for Vernon Jordan to say hello before playing a five-hour round at Farm Neck Golf Club on the Vineyard yesterday: President Obama. STORY OF THE DAY - N.Y. Times A1 News Analysis, As World Boils, Fingers Point Obamas Way, by Peter Baker: Americans often think of their president as an all-powerful figure who can command the tides of history - and presidents have encouraged this image over the years because the perception itself can be a form of power. But as his critics have made the case that Mr. Obamas mistakes have fueled the turmoil in places like Syria, Iraq and Ukraine, the president has increasingly argued that his power to shape these seismic forces is actually limited. ... Daniel L. Byman, a former member of the Sept. 11 commission staff now teaching at Georgetown University [said:] Hes not differentiating between things he can influence and those that he cant. ... Obamas policy of restraint seems to match the public mood - polls find little appetite for robust American intervention in Ukraine, Syria or Iraq. And yet, there is a palpable sense of disappointment with Mr. Obamas leadership on the world stage as well. nyti.ms/1qeSsn9 THE JUICE - Vacation chief has traveled a long road with Obama, by APs Nedra Pickler in Edgartown, Mass.: Obamas top-ranking adviser [in] Marthas Vineyard is a former Illinois political operative who drove him around the state during his Senate campaign a decade ago and then was his personal secretary outside the Oval Office. Now the presidents deputy chief of staff, Anita Decker Beckenridge ... has known Obama since 2003, when the former aide to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed on to his U.S. Senate campaign to introduce the state senator from Chicago to downstate voters. They crisscrossed the state in her sedan, getting to know each other while passing rows of corn, arguing over the radio station and keeping their eyes peeled for a Subway lunch. ... Obama and Breckenridge came to Marthas Vineyard riding face to face in a convoy of helicopters as Coast Guard boats monitored the Vineyard Sound. ... Breckenridge has coordinated with the Secret Service for coverage at Obamas sprawling rented home, on the golf course or wherever else he decides to unwind. Between Obama family outings to the beach and the presidents dinner dates with the first lady, she works into his schedule staff briefings and calls with foreign leaders. She decides when to interrupt his leisure with updates on emerging problems, such as the progress of airstrikes in Iraq and the racially charged unrest in Missouri. When Hillary Clinton wanted to smooth over critical comments she had made about Obamas foreign policy, the former secretary of state emailed Breckenridge to set up a call. Back in Washington, the 36-year-old is responsible for presidential staff and political appointments, Obamas schedule, the advance work of setting up any of his movements and the general nuts and bolts of how Obamas White House functions. His day is organized by Anita, so shes making sure hes seeing people he wants to see, said senior Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. ... Obama chose Breckenridge as deputy chief of staff for operations [in March to succeed] Alyssa Mastromonaco ... [Anita] was viewed as a friendly and efficient gateway to Obama outside the Oval Office but not as an aggressive operator. ... Breckenridge had management experience as chief of staff of the National Endowment for the Arts in Obamas first term and ran his downstate offices when he was senator ... Shes proven to be fiercely protective of his personal needs and quick to turn away those she feels are trying to demand too much of him. [He] accounts for about one-fifth of the cash collected by ... the [NRCC]. Boehner has written almost $18 million in checks to the group, which has raised $101 million this campaign cycle. And he is spending his August recess on a 14-state bus tour to help the GOP [expand] the majority in the House ... By the time Boehner returns to Washington, he will have traveled 6,000 miles and appeared at campaign events for 20 Republicans candidates. ... [House Democratic Leader] Pelosi ... has already paid $1 million directly to the [DCCC] this year and has helped it raise more than $45 million this cycle ... Boehner ... has been a more hands-on fundraiser. Pelosi tended to help other Democratic political machines raise money, whereas Boehner favors collecting the cash through his committees and doling it out from there. ... Boehners Ohio re-election campaign raised $15 million and his national fundraising committee raised more than $25 million. His grass-roots committee, The Freedom Project, raised an additional almost $3 million. ... By combining military force with political brinkmanship, America is making some headway: Obamas judgment is that the jihadists can be properly dealt with only by creating long-term stability in Iraq. A similar situation exists in Syria. Yet the president has long resisted intervening there ... [I]n the long run America is unlikely to be able to destroy or even contain militant jihadism without involving itself in Syria. Mr Obamas new approach in Iraq seems to be working. Rick Perry on two felony counts, alleging he abused his power by threatening to veto funding for the states Public Integrity Unit unless Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, who had pleaded guilty to drunk driving, stepped down. ... Had the governor simply cut the funding without saying anything ... this would just be a strange veto. ... But Perry did speak out. ... The complaint against the governor came from partisans. That ought to raise the burden of proof, but the fact that his detractors would like to topple him doesnt automatically make them wrong; it just makes their motives suspicious. They contend the governors appointees at the Cancer Prevention Research Institution of Texas were under investigation and that Perrys veto might have hobbled that operation. ... The governor is near the end of his term. Getting any of this into a full trial while hes still in office would be extraordinarily fast. This job is ending, but the governor is at the beginning of his next run for office, and the indictment is national news, like Chris Christies bridge.
