ON THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY: November 11th 1967; The infamously publicity shy Van Morrison makes his only appearance on ABC-TVs American Bandstand, lip-synching his big hit, Brown Eyed Girl. He changed the title of Brown Eyed Girl Of. Morrison altered the title Brown Skinned Girl to its final title, Brown Eyed Girl, to make the song more ‘palatable’ for radio stations (since a song about an interracial relationship might not have gone over very well at the time). However, Morrison once said he didn’t actually remember changing the title at all, instead saying that he just noticed that he had without really thinking about it. Morrison didn’t receive appropriate compensation for the success of Brown Eyed Girl. When he wrote it, he was a young, naive musician working for Bert Berns of Bang Records – and due to the contract he signed without legal advice, he didn’t receive any of the royalty money. He’s always been reticent to speak openly about his music or its meaning – instead he prefers to let his music speak for itself. In some interviews, he’s expressed confusion as to why interviewers cared to ask him what he thought of his own compositions. Heres the video of Van Morrisons appearance on American Bandstand lip syncing to the songBrown Eyed Girl..... Enjoy!
