ONE THING AT A TIME A mom sent this to us this week -“In theory, working on one thing at a time, makes sense to me but, in practice, Im struggling. Some days I feel like I am on my kids for every little thing. I dont believe I am to completely ignore those secondary behaviors. Im wondering if there is a middle ground somewhere that I didnt fully grasp.” If you are on your kids for every little thing all day long, perhaps it is time to re-evaluate their level of overall obedience. What percentage of the time does your child come when you call his name right away? What percentage of the time does he do what you ask him to do HOW you have shown him to do it? What percentage of the time does he do what you have asked him to do without arguing with you? Without complaining or whining? Give each of these a percentage and if you are under 75% in any of them, it is time to revisit obedience training. Working on one thing at a time in obedience training means you work on ONE of the areas I listed above until you get it to above 75% compliance. Then you tackle another one that is under 75%. We will talk more about working on one thing at a time in our next post. For more information on obedience training, go to the “Bookstore” tab parentingmadepractical and get the Mom’s Notes presentation, “First-time Obedience Starter Pack” or order our book, “Why Can’t I Get My Kids to Obey”. If you can find a “Growing Kids God’s Way” parenting class in your area, we highly recommend taking it.
