OPEN LETTER TO TAMATI COFFEY FROM FLUORIDE FREE NZ Dear Mr Coffey, Fluoride Free NZ invites you to hear your community’s concerns about water fluoridation at the Informed Dentists and Doctors Event at 4pm on Saturday 26 July at the Sudima Hotel. Listen to the Dentists and Doctors who have reviewed the current information on fluoridation and get a second opinion and become fully informed. Like you, we want the best for the health and well-being of Rotorua’s people and all people in New Zealand. It appears that you may have only been given one side of the fluoridation story. Surprisingly to most, research from overseas and in New Zealand actually shows there are no benefits of fluoridation as the statistics are cherry picked and exaggerated. For example, in a recent Official Information Act request regarding the effect of ending fluoridation in Ashburton, the evidence shows there has been no detrimental effects on dental decay rates in Ashburton despite fluoridation ending in 2002. In fact there has been a steady improvement in dental health in Ashburton, not the increase the Ministry of Health (MOH) declared would happen. In contrast fluoridation has been proven to increase the prevalence of dental fluorosis in areas that are fluoridated. NZ studies show fluoridated areas have twice as much dental fluorosis as non-fluoridated areas (30% compared to 15% of children). Dental fluorosis is the first outward sign of fluoride poisoning. Our children in fluoridated areas are receiving too much fluoride. It gets worse, no safety studies have ever been conducted on industrial fluoride chemicals added to water supplies anywhere in the world. Like you, Fluoride Free NZ wants our kids to ‘have big white smiles’. We believe that fluoridation does not help to achieve good dental health but there are plenty of public health measures than can. We respectfully ask you to attend the presentation on 26 July 2014. This is a great opportunity for you to become fully informed and show Rotorua people that you are an open minded, intelligent man who will always investigate an issue thoroughly and not rely on second hand endorsements.
