#OPINION PARENTS THE HIGHEST CONTRIBUTORS TO POOR PERFORMANCE By James Soi When I was schooling in primary school, our Art Craft & Music (ACM) teacher used to reiterate then that his contribution to our academics excellence was only 20%. It took years to digest that phrase and subsequently came to learn later that his duty was purely guidance, the junk of the learning was by the students. The performance of schools along the valley for the last released examinations was dismal to say the least. Some of the schools came bottom of the county rankings and the mean grades so low such that a bleak future blankly stare on these students. It is a disheartening reality that dreams have been shattered yet those students had equal capabilities of excelling just like their counterparts who excelled, only some emission and commissions conspired to deny them a lifetime opportunity. On that drawback of poor results, the community of Kapyemit along Kerio valley formed a task force to look theoretically, Conceptually and empirically on the circumstances under which resulted into dismal performances. A seven member team was picked from among the community who immediately hit the road. They did interview a broad spectrum of the community populace including parents, teachers and community leadership. After seven months of data collection and analysis, the team presented their report on the 5th of April 2014 before the parents, teachers and the leadership of the community. In their findings, it was observed that all the stakeholders including parents, teachers and students had failed up some levels, but the biggest contributors to the failures lies squarely on the parent. The following reasons were advanced and were equally echoed by those present; 1. That parents of this era are relatively young and do not completely comprehend their role on the success of their children. 2. That most parents over work their children with domestic chores to the extent the children cannot have time to study on their own. 3. That some parents are negligent and ignorant on the academic progress of their children, they do not even bother to know how their children perform at school. 4. That some parents get drunk, leave home before dawn and arrive late in the night. Whether the children went to school does not form part of their concern. 5. That most parents do not provide basic needs to their children such food and clothing, children come to school hungry and cannot concentrate. 6. That most parents do not attend parent meetings and adamantly decline to attend even when requested to. 7. That most parents do not provide their children with learning material such as books, and extra academic supportive learning materials. 8. That most parents do not even assist their children with homework, a modern trend in the progressive schools. From the report, it was a foregone conclusion that parents hold the key to the success of their children. Its my advice therefore to parents to stop neglecting their childrens academics and be on the forefront, so that when your neighbour celebrate success, you can be able to celebrate as well. No child is condemned to failure and fundamentally, all children have equal potentiality to success if placed under equal circumstances. It would therefore be tragic and immoral to kill the potentiality of an innocent child and render it to an hopeless and hapless being.
