OPPORTUNITY ALERT - This morning in the House of Assembly I announced Governments collaboration with Vanguard School in Central Florida to offer two scholarships per year to assist students with special needs to seek secondary education outside the Territory. The school caters to children ages 10 to approximately 20 years who have a range of challenges from Dyslexia to mild autism, Attention Deficit /Hyperactive Disorder, Aspergers syndrome, Downs Syndrome, learning disabilities in reading and math to name a few. As part of the first contact with Vanguard School the Ministry will be making provisions to assist approximately four students to attend the annual summer camp organised by the institution. This will give students an opportunity to get additional help, allow parents to see what is offered as well as see how they can further assist their children with challenges. In order to select students for the scholarship and the summer camp, interested parents are asked to submit a letter of application addressed to the Permanent Secretary to Ms Sabrina Matthew at the Ministry of Education and Culture. A selection will be made based on criteria set up by the Ministry and parents will be advised accordingly. We are asking persons interested in the Summer Programme to submit their letters by May 15th and applications for the scholarship by June 6th.
