ORAL HEALTH PROJECT FOR FILIPINOS (from Reina Arias, Filipina dentist and author of Parents Dental Handbook) An oral health project for Filipinos under the name, “Ngiping Malusog, Batang Masaya” Healthy Teeth, Happy Kid, has been approved for grants by Wrigley Company Foundation in the United States. This project becomes possible through the joint initiatives of Dr. Ellen Fei, a Taiwanese dentist at the Oral Health Centre at Christchurch Hospital and Reina Arias, a dental health professional and a published author of the book, “Parent’s Dental Handbook. Based on observation within the last 5 years, a great number of Filipino children coming to New Zealand has been showing higher DMFT (decayed, missing and filled teeth) rates as compared to children of other ethnicities. This problem on oral health status of our Filipino children is alarming as could be read from the Department of Health of the Philippines website, doh.gov.ph/node/1066.html. Furthermore, they said that according to the 2006 National Oral Health Survey done by Monse B. et al, 97.1% of six-year-old children in public elementary schools in the Philippines suffer from dental caries; 78.4% of twelve-year-old children suffer from dental caries and 49.7% of the same age group manifested symptoms of dentinogenic infections. Sadly, in Canterbury, most of our Filipino children with rampant caries, are being referred to the hospital for treatment under general anaesthesia. Thus, a project on dental health has been conceived and is soon to commence in Christchurch. This would run once monthly from October to February next year. There would be oral health exhibits, lectures and advices for parents, dental care return demonstration, fun activities for children on oral care and dental packs to be given away. Parents who would like their children to be part of this project are requested to register on or before the 13th of October 2014 by texting DENTAL with your name, your child’s name, address and contact numbers to 021 060 1737.
