OUR STRIDERS PROJECT OPERATION SHOEBOX - UPDATE Thanks to the generosity of 31 Striders, today I had the opportunity to hand deliver 31 zip lock baggies full of goodies for our troops stationed overseas to the good folks (all volunteers) at Operation Shoebox headquartered up in Belleview. I was simply blown away and truly blessed by what I observed and learned. I was given the tour of the facility and got a chance to work the assembly line stuffing full a few bags that were earmarked for Iraq and other places. I flipped through dozens, (I mean dozens) of large binders full of letters and pics from men and women overseas with their treasured bags of stuff with huge smiles that you cant imagine. I saw scores of framed pictures and American flags that in many cases hung over Saddams many palaces all signed by grateful servicemen. Operation Shoebox sends out 800-1000 goodie bags for our brave folks in the Armed Services each week, and surpassed the 1 millionth zip lock bag delivery last November. The postage cost alone is enormous at $300,000 annually, so donations are always accepted in addition to the treats and snacks that we provided. I will have Operation Shoebox brochures available at our next several runs for those who wish to get involved. And yes, our Strider tradition to have a formal collection of zip lock bags will continue during the week of 9/11 on a annual basis. Thank you again Striders for contributing to such a worthy cause. I appreciate you.
