OUR VISION OF TOMORROW EMPOWERS US TO LIVE OUR LIVES TODAY NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 11, 2013 Organizations of today always create a mission-vision statement. I thought this was a new thing that modern man has invented or created but listening to the readings of today I realize that it is not so. It has been there since time immemorial in action, guiding each person and community as they journeyed along life. They may not call it mission-vision statement but they have been the underlying element in achieving or realizing something in life. They have inspired people and generations and have led them through different situations and conditions whether it may be favorable or unfavorable. This statement may be just a simple sentence or multiple numbers of sentences to a paragraph or more. When I was young I am flooded with different statements that my parents and grandparents would impart to me as I begin to grow up and mature. At each growth process a statement or two would be imparted. There are times that these statements are mentioned after a life experience. At times these statements would be backed up by experiences that my parents or grandparents underwent. Consciously or unconsciously it guided me. It had given me a way of looking at the present and a vision on how I wish to proceed into the future. As I journeyed through life I would see and experience how powerfully these mission-vision statements are in the growth and development of an individual, a group, a community, a nation, and even the Church whenever they are embraced, are put to heart, and are followed by each one. Mission-vision statements lose their power when they remain as statements. When after forming it, people only pay lip service to it. No matter how grand and noble it may be without a follow through in concrete actions, it will just be like a balloon, all air and no weight. It is good to look at but would be lacking in substance. The gospel calls us to the gravity of the vision we set upon our self and life as well as its consequences. With the right vision and realizing it every step of the way, we will be affirmed by the results we come to realize in the end. And would it be nice to hear from the Lord, Himself, this affirmation? “Good, faithful, and prudent steward, you are faithful in doing these things. Come share your master’s joy”
