OUT OF THE MIRY CLAY By Pastor Margaret Adeyokunnu Psalm 40:1-3 I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. Miry clay is a swampy, soft, and muddy soil. “I waited” means I stayed until He noticed me and paid attention to me. Psalm 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. He that “dwelleth” implies one who is not a visitor. It is referring to one who tarried; not a wishy-washy. Dwelling is different from visiting. Be persistent in the presence of the Lord and keep asking until your joy is full. Whispering doesn’t work when in a situation of a miry clay. You need to cry. The psalmist cried unto God and he was heard. The bible tells us the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the VIOLENT takes it by force (Matthew 11:12). Miracles and answers to prayers come when God notices you. In John 5:2-9, Jesus noticed the man at the pool of Bethesda. WHAT IS A HORIBLE PIT? A situation so bad that except help comes from God, one is done for. A place of sinking. Quick sand. The more one struggles to come out, the deeper one goes! It is when you are in a situation beyond the help of man; when there is NOTHING you can do on your own to be free. In situations like this, all you can do is cry for help. HELP MUST AND WILL COME FOR YOU!!! DIFFERENT TYPES OF MIRY CLAY SICKNESS: The woman with the issue of blood and the man sick with palsy in Mark 2. DEBT: The widow in 2 Kings 4 whose husband died leaving her with lots of debts. SATANIC ATTACKS: The mad man of Gadarene. FAILURE: Business/financial loss, barreness, delay, loneliness, poverty/lack, sudden tragedy, violent crime, handicapped child, divorce, etc. WHAT TO DO TO GET OUT OF THE MIRY CLAY Psalm 40:2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. We can ask God to get us out. There are no permanent pit dwellers; no problem without a solution. No condition is permanent. God wants us out of the miry clay and is always ready to bring us out. To get out of the miry clay, you must realize that it was sin that got you into the miry clay. You must “go and sin no more”… Deal with the issue of sin otherwise something worse will come on you. Sin blocks access to God: Psalm 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me Confess, repent, and FORSAKE the sin. Live holy ALWAYS. After you’re delivered DO NOT GO BACK TO THE SIN!!! To get out of the miry clay, there must be prayer and violent crying until God notices and delivers you. In Mark 10:46-51, Bartimaeus’ voice was heard ABOVE that of the multitude. In Luke 7:11, God took notice of the widow of Nain and had compassion on her. To get out of the miry clay requires the mercy and compassion of God. Let us pray… BIBLE REFERENCES Isaiah 59:1-2 Behold, the LORDs hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God Ecclesiastes 2:26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Matthew 13:25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. The Lord gave the word; great is the company of those that published it (Psalm 68:11)
