Obama Announces Executive Action On Immigration In Speech By far, the most flagrant, dangerous and criminal abuses involving executive action typically have to do with the presidents ability to make war with other nations without congressional or judicial approval. This area, as opposed to when he/she uses the pen to create a fairer and more just world, is where our focus should lie. In many cases, a good law will give those in power the right to use discretionary power, on occasion, in the execution of their job duties, but using ones personal judgment to take the country to war should not be one of those occasions barring a time of national emergency. Pre-emptive wars, as in the Bush Doctrine, are not bona fide national emergencies, and herein lies the crux of the problem with executive action. Im sure other cases do exist and, perhaps, a review of the law is in order, but any future revisions to the law should ensure a given presidents right to use personal discretion in the carrying out of his/her job duties. However, making the case for the laws review by using this specific example (immigration reform) is highly dubious, at best, and smacks of another right-wing plot to shut down the government, impeach a black president and paralyze the nation unless the needs of the rich, as opposed to the working class, middle class and vulnerable, are not served first. Here’s hoping my gut feeling is wrong. “Allow the president to invade a neighboring nation, whenever he shall deem it necessary to repel an invasion, and you allow him to do so whenever he may choose to say he deems it necessary for such a purpose - and you allow him to make war at pleasure.” --Abraham Lincoln
