Obama begins second visit to India U.S. President #BarackObama arrived in #NewDelhi on Sunday, beginning his second visit to #India. During the three-day trip, Obama is to attend India’s Republic Day parade as a chief guest and will co-host a radio phone-in show with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is the first U.S. president to visit India twice in one tenure, and also the first US president to be invited as the chief guest at the Republic Day parade, suggesting the growing ties between the two countries. In fact, #Obama’s visit is expected to enhance US-India cooperation in many fields. Key among them is economics, with the two sides seeking to up bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2020. The two countries are also expected to negotiate on climate change and clean energy, including the forward plans on the US-India civil nuclear deal. Experts say that movement on nuclear trade, which has been a prickly issue with regard to liability, is critical for both countries. India is in need of more energy to power its economy, while U.S. companies are keen to enter what could be a market for nearly $100 billion in investments. Also on the agenda is defense and security cooperation, which has been growing steadily. The U.S. is “a partner in our efforts to seek peace and stability in our extended neighborhood and globally,” said Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson for Indian Ministry of External Affairs. Obama’s trip comes just months after Modi’s first official visit to the U.S. While it is symbolic of closer relations between the two countries, experts say that it also has implications for the regional dynamics and other world powers like China and Russia.
